Lesson 3: Barumba Berry Case Study
Topic 2: Selecting A Treatment
In this topic, we will apply the steps to selecting a treatment for a given commodity.
Objectives:
- Participants will determine which treatment to use.
- Participants will review policies or regulations that may prevent or restrict the use of a treatment.
- Participants will locate potential treatment facilities.
- Participants will recommend a treatment based on information gathered about the commodity and treatment options.
The following fictional story will illustrate what the treatment process looks like in practice. This story depicts the treatments process into two stages: 1) selecting a treatment and 2) applying a treatment.
Recall, from previous case studies, Exportland grows a lot of barumba berries (Tealeo berri). Because barumba berry production is vital to the nation’s economy, it is important for Exportland to sell barumba berries to other countries.
Importland has agreed to accept shipments of barumba berry from Exportland, but is concerned about a serious insect pest of barumba berries, Berri Strictus. Berri Strictus occurs in Exportland but not in Importland and is considered a pest of concern. To safely import barumba berries, Importland has determined that the berries must be inspected and found free of Berri Strictus.
Unfortunately, when the shipment of barumba berries are inspected at the port of arrival in Importland, it is found to be infested with Berri Strictus.
What happens next?
An option available to Importland inspectors is to treat the barumba berries at the port of arrival to prevent Berri Strictus from entering Importland and causing agricultural and environmental damage. Before treating the barumba berries, the inspector has to select a treatment and then administer the treatment process.
Importland officials determine that it is worthwhile to treat the barumba berries. Your job as Importland’s inspector is to supervise the treatment process for these barumba berries. You will first need to select a treatment and then administer the treatment.
Selecting a treatment of a commodity must be considered on a case-by-case basis. To select a treatment for any commodity, you must consider four factors: 1) determine which treatment to use, 2) review policies or regulations that may prevent or restrict the use of a treatment, 3) locate potential treatment facilities, and 4) recommend a treatment based on information gathered. These four factors will direct your decision in selecting the best treatment for any commodity.
